Stand up paddle surfing (SUP), stand up paddle boarding, or in the Hawaiian language Hoe he'e nalu, is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage. The sport is an ancient form of surfing, and has reemerged as a way for surfers to paddle longer distances.
Stand up paddle surfing is now the fastest growing water surf activity because it allows a wider range of athletic types to get involved and SUP surfers need not schedule around high and low tides.
Readers who enjoy the occasional peek at the gossip magazines may also be aware of SUP's possibilities as a "core" workout. Hollywood preeners such as Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey have been papped on a paddleboard, glamourising the workout part of the sport.
Recently Yoga gurus are taking the boards out on the water to intensify their normal routines that would be performed on solid ground. As you can imagine the balance required to do Yoga on a moving surface is immense not to mention being at one with nature surrounded by the sounds and sights of the ocean!
Stand Up Paddleboarding is extremely versatile. You can go fishing from a board, Snorkel from a board, go tandom Stand Up Paddleboarding with a friend/partner/child or even your pet dog! You can cruise along on flat water, or ride the waves with a SUP board. You can enter any public body of water such as lakes and rivers as well as oceans making this an extremely accessable sport.
